A pharaoh was the king of Egypt — and also believed to be a living god! They led the army, made the laws, and led important religious ceremonies.

Pharaohs wore a special double crown to show they ruled both Upper and Lower Egypt, and a fake braided beard as a sign of power. Even queens who ruled, like Hatshepsut, sometimes wore the beard!
